FAQs
Where will the project be located?
The Project will sit on approximately three acres within the 12-acre property located on the south side of Chincoteague Road (175)near the intersection with Fleming Road (679) in Wattsville. There are several existing utility/light poles along the western edge of the Parcel. The project will be set back at least 100 feet from all neighboring property lines, will been enclosed by a screening wall, and will be thoroughly landscaped.

What will be located at the facility?
The Project will include the following equipment and associated facilities:
Lithium-ion batteries
Battery energy storage system containers
Thermal management systems for temperature control
Fire detection and suppression systems
Electric control equipment
Power Conversion Systems (Inverters / transformers)
Step-up transformer and project substation, including lightning protection, a control enclosure, and internal fencing
Communications equipment
Estimated 16-foot tall perimeter screening wall and security gate
69kV generator tie-line and utility interconnection
Other facilities required for construction and operation of the Energy Storage Facility
What will the facility look like?
The Project facilities will sit on approximately four acres of the 12-acre property and will be set back at least 100 feet from all neighboring property lines. The Project will be enclosed by a screening wall and shielded from the road and adjacent homes and businesses. Additionally, a landscape buffer will screen the Project from neighboring residents and public roadways. Various native tree species and bushes with an anticipated mature height of over 20 feet will be planted around the project and will be maintained throughout project life.

Is battery storage safe?
Yes, and our top priority is safety. During operations, the project will not produce fumes, pollution, odor, dust, or other offsite impacts that would result in health impacts to those nearby and will not lead to increased traffic on local roads. The project will also be set back at least 100 feet from neighboring property lines, will be enclosed by a screening wall, and will be thoroughly landscaped.
Properly designed, operated, and maintained, battery energy storage facilities are very safe. Each battery module within the containers is individually controlled and monitored, providing constant, 24/7 oversight capability over every component of the Project. Each enclosure is equipped with an integrated system of sensors, alarms, and fire detection and management systems. The operational management systems will be designed, installed, and operated according to national Fire Code standards and regulations, which include energy storage-specific regulations.
Safe operation is achieved through common-sense design parameters; state-of-the-art technology for monitoring, alarm, and fire suppression systems; and clear, open, and regular communication with first responders. Jupiter Power has been in close communication and coordination with the Accomack County Department of Public Safety and local volunteer fire departments throughout the process of Project design and look forward to continuing that cooperation throughout the life of the Project.
How will this project benefit the community?
The Project will benefit Accomack County residents and businesses by improving the power grid, aligning with the county’s Comprehensive Plan, and supporting the local economy.
Battery energy storage is a proven technology that dramatically improves grid management capabilities and provides useful backup power and power quality support. With these capabilities, the Project will deliver more reliable power for Accomack County residents and businesses—all without requiring new transmission infrastructure, which is often funded by ratepayers.
As currently planned, the 80-Megawatt Project would represent an estimated investment of more than $45 million dollars in Accomack County, and an estimated $3.6 million in tax revenue for the county over 25 years. In addition, the Project will create construction jobs and local sales tax benefits during construction.
When will construction start?
Site work is expected to begin as soon as the Spring of 2023 and construction will take approximately 9-12 months.
The Project is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2024.
Construction timeline and updates will be provided on this website prior to the commencement of site work.
